When looking into a career in culinary arts, you should first consider the fact that an education will greatly help you in your quest for culinary success.
It’s likely that you can register for cooking classes at your local community college, but the extra price you would pay for courses in culinary arts institutions would significantly increase your chances of landing a well-paid job. There are many cuisine schools that only require a high school diploma for acceptance, but an associate degree is recommended.
Educational Opportunities
There are two types of degrees you could earn that will help you pursue a career in culinary arts: a Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS), or an Associate in Occupational Studies (AOS). Both of these can be obtained from culinary institutes and some community colleges and universities. A BPS is recommended for those coming from high school, while an AOS is aimed at aspiring chefs who already have a bachelor’s degree or are changing careers.
Programs such as baking and pastry art studies can last anywhere from six weeks to four years. The shorter programs are usually for a specific practice such as making and decorating baked goods, while the longer ones are less intensive and can include an education in other culinary and academic areas. The majority of class time in culinary arts schools is spent in the kitchen; because of this, online courses are uncommon, but available. You cannot earn a complete culinary arts degree online unless you have prior lab experience.
A dessert chef program usually includes hundreds of hours of hands-on kitchen work. Most basic baking classes may teach skills such as dough shaping, classic pastry production and showpiece designing. In advanced courses, you can learn techniques such as gluten-free bread making, chocolate making and wedding cake baking and design.
Permits
Food handling permits are required while attending a culinary arts school and working in the food business. They can be obtained by paying a fee and attending a short class where the basics of food safety are reviewed. A food handling permit is valid for two years from the date of the class.
Learning in the Workforce
Many chefs forgo attending school altogether, rather hoping to gain experience by working in restaurants. Such a test run is a surefire way to tell if the foodservice industry is right for you, since many chefs graduate from culinary school only to begin work and realize that this field isn’t for them. Most culinary arts schools recommend and even require working in foodservice while enrolled. Besides restaurant work, apprenticeships under top chefs offer ample knowledge and look impressive on resumes. In today’s competitive food industry, education and experience are the key ingredients to a successful culinary career.
