Human Resources professionalA strong educational foundation will better prepare you for a career in human resources management. To succeed in this profession, you need an educational background in business and organizational behavior. There is more to HR than hiring new employees. A college degree will give you the knowledge necessary to procure employment and kick start your career.

Associate Degree
Few online schools or even vocational schools have associate programs that concentrate on human resources (HR). You will be hard-pressed locating an institute that offers such a degree, and then you will encounter the difficulty of securing employment with it. Every employer you approach will prefer a candidate with a bachelor’s degree.

Bachelor’s Degree
A prerequisite to entry-level employment within a business is that you have sufficient education to prove you are capable of learning quickly and consistently completing assignments. Bachelor’s degrees are offered at online colleges with concentrations in HRM, though students have also gained entry to this industry with degrees in organizational behavior and psychology. Each has a different application to the industry:

  • HRM majors fit into any specialist or generalist position
  • Psychology majors fulfill roles in counseling, employee relations and worker efficiency
  • Organizational behavior majors excel in employee relations, communications and overall morale building

Master’s Degree
While not as necessary as a bachelor’s degree, there are professional perks involved with going on to achieve a master’s degree. Apart from enabling you to compete with other graduates for higher positions in the corporate chain, you’ll be better equipped with knowledge and comprehension of more complex HRM concepts such as:

  • Corporate governance
  • Organizational design
  • Human capital development
  • Transformational leadership

A master’s program at an online college or vocational school will better equip you to understand and analyze ambiguous concepts in the industry. Professionals who gain this level of education stand a better chance of gaining upper management positions.

PhD
The application of this highest achievement in education will be especially applicable in research and upper management functions. Should you choose not to become a professor with this prestigious degree, you can work in an HRM function that involves researching complex employee behaviors such as what causes employees to take days off, the effect stress has on their productivity, and what creates job satisfaction at the company. Education at this level, while difficult to obtain, is still quite fruitful from a professional standpoint.

Associations
It is advisable that you join a local chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Like all career-based associations, this will give you an opportunity to network with professionals in your industry. In addition, SHRM offers training courses so that you can obtain specialized certifications as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). Both of these will acutely enhance your education and experience, earning you more opportunities for career advancement.
