Reflexively, it is our humorous and ironic tendency to claim that the opposite gender is too complicated to understand. We all behave and react to emotions differently due to our familial upbringing, social status, genetic traits and a myriad other contributing factors. You may be directing a complex experiment designed to provoke a known or unknown reaction. Your understanding of the human mind and behavior will have a strong influence in your ability to plan or analyze a situation and direct it toward a solution or reaction.

Education in the field of psychology draws heavily upon theory and study. This practice is based largely upon the ever-changing behaviors of society and the scientific studies performed to understand them. College programs and online courses will focus on traditional, theoretical and unproven theories to help ground your understanding of human behavior. Whether it is studying Maslow’s hierarchy of needs or analyzing subliminal processing in cognitivism, you will become intimately familiar with the comprehensive studies of the human mind. Because of the academic focus in the field of psychology, the majority of students will enter the field with at least a bachelor’s, if not a master’s degree.

Psychologists are considered behavioral or social scientists. For example, as a private practice or school counselor you would work with individuals of diverse cultures, upbringings and personalities to help discover the psychological issues with which they may be coping. Your clients may simply want someone to listen to them or they may need your specialized knowledge to help uncover issues through questions and observation. However, application of this profession is not relegated to the private or educational sectors and is also found within corporations and organizations. In fact, there is a wide variety of careers available to trained psychologists.

Psychology isn’t about having a patient lie on a couch and tell you their life story while you speculate about possible reasons for their faults. It’s about analyzing social and behavioral cues, and from these helping people overcome hidden or apparent problems. Social science means understanding what contributes to the emotions, activities and thoughts we face on a daily basis and how to overcome or change these processes. Your study and contributions to this field can only help to further our understanding of the complexities of the human mind.
