Stress for a working mom can come in a variety of forms – taking adequate time to care for your children, assignments at the office, finances and relationships. Such concerns will not disappear overnight. Because of that, dealing with these worries day in and day out can become tiresome and stressful. These are some ideas to help you alleviate some of the stresses and worries that come with being a mother in the workforce.
Be At Peace with Your Decision
If you’ve ever heard your daughter say she wants (or doesn’t want) to grow up and be a working mom like you, it has probably given you some guilty feelings. Are you doing the right thing? There are many reasons for having a job and being a mother at the same time. Identify your reasons for having a career and the benefits and disadvantages of doing so.
If you are unhappy with your decision, consider whether there are other options such as working from home, restructuring your budget or working part time. Or plan how you can more effectively spend meaningful time with your kids. Decide to allow yourself to feel comfortable with your choice. Ask other women who are mothers in the workforce to see how they feel about balancing their career and their family.
Communicate with Your Childcare Provider
Talk to your daycare service about your child. Staying informed with what goes on while you can’t be there can help you feel more involved. Ask them about how your child is doing. You can do this in a variety of ways: telephone calls, in person and via email. How is his or her development compared to other students? Is he or she happy playing with the other children? Find out what they are learning so you can talk to your child about those things. Find out if your childcare provider uses technology to share classroom experiences with parents. For instance, do they have a webcam in the classroom? Do they take pictures during class activities to share with parents or to make into an end-of-semester video?
Stay Fit
With all the responsibilities of working and caring for your family, it can be hard to keep up with maintaining your body. Just remember that getting enough exercise is a must if you want to de-stress. You'll feel better and accomplish more if you are physically fit. Exercising regularly will help you to sleep better and handle your stress more effectively. Besides that, when you exercise your body releases chemicals in your brain that boost your happiness levels. So get out there and do some exercising!
Take Time for Yourself & Others
Build relationships with new people and those you already know. Talk to friends and family on the phone, visit with them during your lunch break, go exercising together or plan an outing. Enriching your relationships can add a layer of fulfillment to your life.
Even though you may feel you already are away from your kids too much, it’s important to take a moment for yourself. In order to be effective, healthy and happy, you need to spend a little time each day taking care of yourself. Whether it is going on a walk, doing Yoga in your room or reading a book, find something you enjoy doing and allow yourself a little period of relaxation.
Look for the Variety in Your Day
If you are feeling like the only change in the blur of your week is that your coworkers are wearing different outfits each day, it’s time to find the variety in your workday. Doing this may open your eyes to things you haven’t noticed, or at least for a while. It may help you remember funny things that happen or remind you of things for which you are grateful.
Try these techniques to release stress during your busy schedule. Having a job and being a mom can be taxing. Keeping yourself rejuvenated can help you be more effective and happier.
